JAKARTA - The government has taken firm steps against mining activities on small islands in Raja Ampat Regency, Southwest Papua, by revoking the Mining Business License (IUP) of four companies which are considered to have a negative impact on the environment and tourist areas.
This decision was announced at a press conference at the Jakarta Presidential Palace, Tuesday (10/6/2025), and delivered directly by the Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi with the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Environment and Forestry Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, and Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni.
Responding to this, Member of Commission I DPR RI from the Golkar Party faction, Nurul Arifin, expressed his appreciation for the steps taken by the government. "We really appreciate President Prabowo and the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia's decision regarding the revocation of permits for four mining companies in Raja Ampat. This shows the state's alignment with environmental conservation and protection of the rights of indigenous peoples in an ecologically sensitive area," said Nurul, who is also the Chair of the Media and Opinion Raising of the Golkar Party's DPP, Tuesday, June 10.
The four companies whose permits were revoked were PT Kawei Sejahtera Mining on Kawe Island, PT Mulia Raymond Perkasa on Batang Pele Island and Manyaifun Island, PT Anugerah Surya Pratama on Manuran Island, and PT Nurham at Yesner Waigeo Timur.
The four companies are located within the Raja Ampat Geopark area, based on a presentation delivered by Minister Bahlil. Meanwhile, the only mining company operating outside Geopark is PT GAG Nickel which is located on Gag Island, more than 40 km from the Piaynemo tourist area.

Despite being outside the Geopark area, for PT GAG Nickel, the government continues to take evaluative steps to prevent possible environmental damage. Nurul stated that the Golkar Party supports the policies taken by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil, and hopes that mining management will be carried out responsibly for the prosperity of the people.
"We hope that the impact caused by the mine can be controlled and managed properly, so that the results of nickel mining on Gag Island really benefit as much as possible for the prosperity of the people," he said. He also emphasized the importance of rehabilitation and reforestation as part of environmental responsibility.
The former mining land must be rehabilitated periodically. Reforestation with local species is important to restore the ecological function of forests. This must be an absolute requirement so that environmental sustainability is maintained," added Nurul. Not only that, Nurul emphasized that the community must be involved in the entire mining activity planning and supervision process. "This community involvement is important. They must be involved from the start, and be given tangible benefits from mining through compensation, job opportunities, as well as a sustainable corporate social responsibility program (CSR)," he said.
Nurul closed his statement by stating that the government's decision to revoke the IUP was an important signal that economic growth and environmental protection must go hand in hand. "This is a momentum to fix mining governance in Indonesia. We must ensure that every natural resource policy sides with the people, nature, and future generations," he concluded.
