Car Hits Crowd Of Pedestrians Near Beijing School, 4 People Injured

JAKARTA - Vehicles hit a crowd outside Beijing's primary school on Thursday and injured pedestrians.

Beijing traffic police said four people were injured when a small passenger car hit several pedestrians in Haidian district, but did not say whether the action was intentional or took place outside the school.

Police said the driver had been detained and an investigation was underway. The city government did not immediately respond to a response request.

Many schools in China, a country that already has a wide surveillance system, have stepped up police presence and strengthened gates since last year following a series of similar incidents near schools and other places.

In November 2024, the SUV hit students and pedestrians outside an elementary school in the southern city of Changde, injuring several people.

A week before the incident, in one of the deadliest attacks in years, a 62-year-old man angered by the division of assets in his divorce killed 35 people by crashing a car into a crowd in a sports center in the southern city of Zhuhai.
