JAKARTA - The largest digital music streaming platform today, Spotify, has recorded very massive economic growth, where the royalty income of Indonesian musicians has increased more than twofold in the past three years.

Spotify Southeast Asia Managing Director, Gustav Back, revealed that this phenomenon is a tangible proof of how the digital ecosystem is able to turn the dedication of listeners into concrete financial success for creative workers.

According to him, this growth also confirms the important position of local works in the international market.

"The global music streaming economy now reaches nearly 17 billion US dollars. And that's a significant figure. However, the more important story is who is participating in that growth and how Indonesian artists are growing their share," Gustav Back told the media in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, Thursday, June 25.

According to Back, this increase in revenue reflects the increasingly healthy dynamics of the industry. Last year alone, the total royalties generated by Indonesian musicians on the platform managed to grow above 16 percent.

"In Indonesia, the growth is very significant. The royalties generated by Indonesian artists on Spotify grew by more than 16 percent last year alone. And over the past three years, the number has more than doubled," added Back.

This achievement validates that music is no longer just a hobby, but a promising career path.

However, Back provided education regarding the business scheme running on his platform. He straightened out the wrong view that considered the streaming platform to send royalty funds directly to the accounts of singers or songwriters.

"One thing that needs to be clarified is that Spotify does not pay artists directly. We pay royalties to copyright holders; labels, distributors, publishers, and others," said Back.

"The amount received by each artist depends on their agreement with these parties," he added.

Through its annual transparency report titled Loud & Clear, the Swedish platform is committed to opening up data as widely as possible to make the music ecosystem fairer. This transparency is expected to strengthen the bargaining position of independent musicians when contracting with third parties or record labels.

Gustav added that the main mission of his platform is to bridge the hidden new talents who are pioneering their careers so that they can get a decent stage in the future. Investing in search algorithm technology is considered the key to success.

"Spotify's job, our only job, is to create opportunities for artists to be discovered by new fans, and for fans to build deeper connections with the artists and music they love," said Gustav Back.
