JAKARTA - Three prospective Indonesian migrant workers (CPMI) were found safe after the speed boat they were traveling on almost sank in Rokan Hilir waters, Riau. The three of them allegedly wanted to go illegally to Malaysia for work.
Head of the Riau Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Service Center (BP3MI), Fanny Wahyu Kurniawan, said the rescue operation was carried out with the Dumai Navy after receiving reports of three people asking for help at sea.
"The three people asked for help because their speed boat was almost sinking, hit by the waves and bad weather," Fanny said in a written statement received in Jakarta, Tuesday, May 6.
After being rescued, the three were immediately taken to the Panipahan Navy Post for questioning. They admitted that they wanted to go to Malaysia to work illegally.
"The three of them are Indonesian citizens who previously worked in Selangor, Malaysia, for one year. Of the three people, one woman has a passport that is no longer valid, while the other two men do not have a passport at all," said Fanny.
The three illegal CPMIs have now been handed over to the Dumai Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Service Post (P4MI) for the repatriation process to their area of origin.
"Then they will be sent back to their families through the mentoring process," he said.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI), Abdul Kadir Karding, again reminded the public not to be tempted to work abroad through illegal routes.
Karding said the majority of cases of violence against migrant workers occurred because they departed without official procedures.
