JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections (Kumham Imipas) Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP) will only be completed by the end of 2025, considering that the latest Criminal Code (KUHP) will take effect from January 2026.

"The KUHP will take effect in January 2026. Hopefully, before the end of this year the Criminal Procedure Code can be completed, so that inequality does not occur again," said Yusril when met at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Rights, Kumham Imipas, Jakarta, Thursday, March 20, quoted by Antara.

He explained that the preparation of the new Criminal Procedure Code was the responsibility of the Ministry of Law led by Supratman Andi Agtas. The problem inventory list (DIM) related to the revision of the Criminal Procedure Code has also been submitted.

"So far, it has been smooth, Mr. Supratman does not need to consult with us. If there are some crucial things, of course, they may need to be appointed to a coordination meeting to be completed," said Yusril.

Previously, the 13th Plenary Meeting of the DPR RI During the Second Session of the 2024 '2025 Session Year had approved the Draft Law on Amendments to Law Number 8 of 1981 concerning the Criminal Procedure Law (RUU KUHAP) as the proposed bill for the initiative of the DPR RI.

The Criminal Procedure Code Bill is included in the 2025 Priority National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) proposed by Commission III of the DPR RI. The Criminal Procedure Code is considered important to be immediately discussed because the new Criminal Code or Criminal Code will take effect from 2026.

According to Coordinating Minister Yusril, the new Criminal Procedure Code will guarantee human rights. One form is the affirmation of the time limit for the status of a suspect against someone with legal problems.

"Why do people being tortured constantly become a burden for the person concerned," Yusril added.

The previous suspect's status limit was not strictly regulated in the old Criminal Procedure Code. Therefore, in addition to ensuring human rights, Coordinating Minister Yusril believes that the new Criminal Procedure Code also guarantees justice and legal certainty.
