KM Lyyra Transports 80 Tons Of Diesel Oil Burned Due To An Electric Short Circuit, 5 Victims Evacuated By Lanal Ranai

NATUNA - Naval Base (Lanal) Ranai, Natuna Regency, Riau Islands, evacuated four crew members (ABK) and one captain of KM Lyyra who caught fire to Subi District.

The Commander of Posal Subi, Marine Lieutenant (P) Edi Sandra said that of the five victims who were evacuated, two suffered minor injuries and one died. The evacuation process was carried out on Tuesday morning.

"Two victims have been rushed to the Subi Health Center, while the bodies of the victims who died have been secured while waiting for their families for the funeral process," he said when confirmed from Natuna, Antara, Tuesday, March 28.

The KM Lyyra route starts from the Lampa Strait to Subi Island and Midai Island by carrying 80 tons of diesel oil. However, the ship ran aground in the waters of Subi District.

Knowing that the ship ran aground, the captain of the wooden boat with a capacity of 46 gross tones (GT) tried to release the ship.

However, there was an engine failure, then when trying to revive the electrical short circuit at the starter, triggering sparks and causing a fire.

"This pump carries oil for Diesel Power Plants (PLTD) in the Subi and Midai areas," he said.

He added that currently his party and the team continue to coordinate and cooperate with related parties for further handling.

He hopes that similar incidents will not repeat itself and the public is advised to always be careful and ensure shipping security.

"The evacuation was carried out with the community and the National Police using fishing boats," he said.
