US Death Tornado: 29 People Killed, Majority Stayed At Home

Deadly tornado storm hit a number of areas in the United States (US), destroying schools, turning trucks around at a number of points, resulting in 26 deaths.

The number of victims, based on the latest updates from the Kansas Highway Patrol, reported eight people were killed in a series of accidents after a tornado triggered a dust storm on Friday, March 14 local time.

The Sherman County accident involved 50 vehicles.

The highest death toll came from Missouri. A total of 12 people died because they remained at home when Missouri was hit by a tornado overnight.

The death toll included a man whose house was razed to the ground due to being swept away by a tornado.

"The house is no longer recognizable. It's just debris," said Butler County Police Chief Jim Akers, quoted by AFP.

Akers then described the situation when he and the Joint SAR Team made a rescue when a tornado storm hit his area. "The floor is upside down. We walked over the wall," he recalled.

A resident named Dakota Henderson said neighbors were trying to help save those trapped in the house when a tornado hit on Friday, March 14 evening local time.

He admitted that he found five bodies lying down while they were self-evacuating at his aunt's house in the Wayne County area, Missouri, which was badly affected by the disaster.

Dakota said that during the incident of her aunt in the bedroom, the only room left in her aunt's house was due to the disaster. He then took her out of the house through the window. While other residents also evacuated a man whose arms and legs were broken from inside his house.

"It happened last night very difficult," said Dakota, which was surrounded by fallen trees and houses that were destroyed on Saturday, March 15.

"It's sad to see what happens to people, victims last night," he continued.

Officials in Arkansas said three people were killed in Independence County and 29 others were injured in eight areas as a tornado hit the state.

"We deployed a team to review the damage caused by the tornado last night and have placed emergency response officers on the ground to help," said Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders via social media account (medsos) X.

Sarah and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp then declared a disaster emergency status in the states of Arkansas and Georgia. Kemp said the disaster status was set to anticipate potential bad weather after the incident.
