PoNOROGO - Eight teenagers in Ponorogo Regency, East Java had to celebrate Lebaran in a detention center after being named a suspect in a case of making and flying a hot air balloon accompanied by firecrackers.

Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Ponorogo Police, AKP Rudi Hidajanto, said that his party arrested them after the hot air balloon that was flown fell in Wonogiri Regency, Central Java, along with a number of firecrackers that failed to explode.

This case began when one of the perpetrators, IAZ, took the initiative to fly a hot air balloon in Ramadan this year.

He then invited VLN, VCK, RFE, RFA, and ABR to jointly make hot air balloons with funds collected around Rp. 2 million.

"They already intend to fly balloons on this Ramadan," said Rudi as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, March 11.

On January 26, the perpetrators together with IDF and ATS flew the hot air balloon in the rice fields in Bogem Village, Sampung District. The balloon is equipped with firecrackers measuring 15 cm to 30 cm.

"The candidate flew with the firecrackers burning and headed west," he continued.

Three days later, on January 29, the balloon fell in Bulukerto Village/District, Wonogiri Regency. Luckily there were no casualties, but a number of large firecrackers failed to explode.

"From the results of the investigation, it is known that the balloon came from Ponorogo. We then identified and arrested the perpetrators," he explained.

After being arrested, they admitted their actions. Of the eight perpetrators, five of them are minors, namely VLN, VCK, RFE, RFA, and ABR. However, they are still undergoing legal proceedings.

The suspects were charged with the Republic of Indonesia Emergency Law Number 12 of 1951 and Law Number 1 of 2009 concerning Aviation.

"The threat is a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison or life imprisonment," said Rudi.
