JAKARTA - Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the government wants to launch a new program to offer volunteer military training starting next year, targeting to train 100,000 volunteers by 2027.

"The most important thing for us is that everyone interested can participate in the training no later than 2026. It's a difficult task, but I know it can be done," Tusk said ahead of a government hearing.

"In 2027 we will achieve the ability to train 100,000 volunteers per year. Apart from professional soldiers and outside the Territorial Defense Forces, we must de facto build a reserve army and our actions will serve this goal," he continued.

The government supports providing military training to all adult men last week as Warsaw prepares for threats from Moscow.

Driven by Russia's invasion of neighboring Ukraine three years ago, Poland is now spending a higher proportion of GDP on defense than any other NATO member.
