JAKARTA - Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Muhammad Tito Karnavian asked local governments (Pemda) to take anticipatory steps in dealing with potential extreme weather.

According to him, this step is needed to ensure that the state is present in the community, especially those affected by natural disasters.

Don't let the community, they work alone. The state must be present and the presence of the country is the most important. In the short term, the most important thing is that we must know about the [weather] prediction of what will happen," Tito said as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, March 10.

He gave an example that in other countries natural disasters also occur. However, this can be anticipated properly so that the number of victims can be minimized.

The Minister of Home Affairs asked the local government to take the necessary steps. In addition, in the long term, disaster-affected areas are encouraged to discuss the best scheme in dealing with potential disasters.

"The most important thing is that the information (predictions for extreme weather) is accurate and we quickly alert our strengths," he added.

Tito also encouraged local governments to take advantage of weather information provided by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

In particular, the Minister of Home Affairs asked regions that have related agencies to coordinate with the BMKG to obtain valid weather forecast information, so that anticipatory steps can be taken better.

In addition, local governments are reminded to ensure the smooth implementation of homecoming.

Based on the Coordination Meeting (Rakor) chaired by the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (PMK) some time ago, a policy was prepared to unravel the density of the homecoming flow of Eid Al-Fitr and Nyepi Holy Day.

One of the proposed steps is the implementation of the Work From Anywhere (WFA) policy for State Civil Apparatus (ASN) on March 24, 2025. This step is expected to reduce the density of travelers on certain days.

"Well, please every region, every ministry/institution is asked to regulate each other. Every service can regulate, the important thing is that work continues," said Tito.

The Minister of Home Affairs emphasized that local governments must ensure that public services continue to run normally during the WFA implementation. In addition, local governments must also ensure smooth homecoming flows with various steps, such as ensuring road infrastructure is feasible for vehicles to pass, arranging potential spilled markets that can disrupt traffic, and anticipating the possibility of homecoming congestion at certain points.

"Dermaga, port, also needs to be checked. Do not overcapacity, especially at small piers. Then many incidents have happened, such as events [accidents] in Lake Toba and others, we try not to happen," he said.
