JAKARTA - Governor Wayan Koster asked that Bali's tourism wealth be immediately registered as a Geographical Indication of Intellectual Property Rights (HKI).

"Currently we have 15 registered Geographical Indications, but I see that this figure does not reflect the full potential of Bali, so I invite all regional devices, city/district governments, universities, creative communities, business associations, and MSMEs to move together to accelerate intellectual property protection in Bali," said Koster, quoted by Antara.

Koster in Denpasar, Friday, encouraged the Geographical Indication of Tourism to respond to the direction of Member of Commission XIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives Yasonna Laoly for Bali to patent its geographical wealth related to tourism.

In 2025, Bali managed to obtain Geographical Indication certificates for Gula Dawan Klungkung, Tenun Cepuk Tanglad Nusa Penida, Gianyar Bali Rock Painting, and Lemukih Buleleng Robusta Coffee.

Meanwhile, those that are in the process in 2026 are Batu Pulaki Banyupoh Buleleng and Tenun Songket Gelgel.

According to the Bali Provincial Government, this shows that awareness of the importance of intellectual property protection continues to increase. Therefore, the government guarantees it by providing easy access.

"The Bali Provincial Government continues to be committed to facilitating easy access, providing assistance, and sustainable education with the Ministry of Law so that the registration of Intellectual Property is faster, easier, and more affordable," said Koster.

Koster explained that HKI certificates, which have various types such as Geographical Indications, Copyright, Patents and others, are no longer a formality or merely a legal administrative matter.

According to him, intellectual property has become an economic instrument, like a shield and sword for IKM and UMKM to fight in the global market.

From the Bali Provincial Government data, outside the 15 Geographical Indications, it is known that this year since January to June, 5,889 Intellectual Property applications have been recorded.

Member of the Indonesian Parliament Yasonna Laoly in Bali on Friday also gave an example of Geographical Indication on Kintamani Coffee which managed to stimulate the spirit of the community and local government.

"How do we encourage the location of planting kintamani coffee to become a tourism destination, showing how to make, how to plant, harvest, dry it, and until the finished product, the same as how to make salt in a geographical location," he said.

According to him, the Geographical Indication of Intellectual Property Rights will make objects as regional wealth, not individuals.

"If there is a violation committed by an individual, then the government or related agencies have the right to take firm action, and protection for the owner of the copyright or intellectual property, this is aimed at the continuation of copyright," said Yasonna.
