President Zelensky Says Ukraine Needs United States Support For Diplomacy Ends War With Russia

JAKARTA - President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday Ukraine was committed to intensive diplomacy to end a three-year war with Russia quickly, emphasizing he hopes to rely on United States support for securing peace.

President Zelensky issued a series of statements three days after his meeting at the White House with US President Donald Trump, which led to heated debates, underscoring the need for urgent diplomacy and the importance of Washington's support for Kyiv.

President Zelensky's remarks came after President Trump signaled his patience had run out with the Ukrainian leader, following Kyiv's statement about the end of the war with Russia "very, very far away".

"It is very important for us to try to make our diplomacy really substantive to end this war as soon as possible," President Zelensky tweeted on X.

"We are working with America and our European partners and are looking forward to US support on the journey to peace. Peace is needed as soon as possible," he continued.

President Zelensky attended a weekend meeting with Ukrainian allies in Europe aimed at drafting a war settlement plan two days after the White House clash.

Since the heated debate at the White House last Friday, President Zelensky has been working hard to emphasize that relations with Washington are a priority and believe the relationship can be improved.

Yesterday, the Ukrainian Parliament added its support Monday for diplomacy and strong ties with Washington, with statements describing Trump's peacekeeping efforts as "important".

In subsequent comments on the Telegram messaging app, President Zelensky stressed unity between Ukraine and its partners, including the United States, after phone calls with leaders from three Baltic countries, who supported Ukraine but did not attend a summit of European countries on Sunday in London.

President Zelensky said he informed them of the outcome of the meeting, repeating Ukraine needed security guarantees as part of resolving any conflict.

"Together, we must prepare an action plan to bring us closer to real security guarantees. There are concrete initiatives and we will continue to work," he wrote.

"Unity with all our partners is important for us to end the war as quickly as possible and provide reliable and lasting peace," President Zelensky added.

"Ukraine, Europe and the US, only together we can restore security to all of our people. And this is really possible," he added.

The President of Ukraine emphasized his intent in a late-night video address, saying the absence of security guarantees had been a major factor behind Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and an eight-year insurgency by Russian-backed separatists who seized large parts of eastern Ukraine.

"And now, due to a lack of clear security guarantees, Russia continues this war. The whole world sees this and the whole world recognizes it," he said.

"Ukraine, all Europe and America, together we can ensure stability for decades. To achieve this, we must be constructive, work together, complement each other's proposals and accelerate diplomacy to end the war," he said.
