Bengawan Solo Overflows, A Number Of Areas In Surakarta Are Submerged By Floods

SOLO A number of points in the city of Surakarta, Central Java, were inundated by the overflowing of the Bengawan Solo tributary on Tuesday, February 25, early in the morning.

Head of the Surakarta City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Nico Agus Putranto, in a flood review on Tuesday said that the flood occurred at around 01.45 WIB.

Based on the data received, there were four sub-districts that were affected by the overflow of the tributaries and the Bengawan Solo River.

"The high rainfall in the upstream area caused the Bengawan Solo River to overflow. As a result, four sub-districts in two sub-districts in Solo were flooded," he said.

The four affected villages are Sangkrah Village, Sewu Village, Jebres Village, and Mojo Village.

He added that the increase in water occurred quite quickly, and even had time to enter people's homes.

"Some residents took refuge in tents on the embankment, such as in Kampung Sewu," he said.

BPBD has distributed logistical assistance and equipment, including four tents and 20 mattresses, in Sangkrah Village.

Nico also appealed to the public to remain vigilant about the condition of the tributaries and the Bengawan Solo River.

"We ask residents to remain alert because the water level of the Bengawan Solo River is still on red alert status," he said.

On the other hand, the Deputy Mayor of Surakarta, Astrid Widayani, stated that the current flood conditions have begun to improve.

"This morning it has improved. I thank you for the cooperation of all parties, ranging from urban villages, BPBD, to linmas, who have worked together in dealing with floods," he said.

He also reminded all parties, both officers and the public, to be more alert in facing the current weather conditions.

"We have to be more alert in the future, especially in the rainy season, considering that this area is close to the river. He said that this area often experiences inundation, so please pay attention together," he said while reviewing the location of the flood in Sangkrah Village.
