JAKARTA - One of the founders of a French crypto company, Ledger, was released after being kidnapped from his home in France.

David Balland was kidnapped on Tuesday morning at his home in central France and taken by car to another place where he was held hostage, prosecutors said in a statement on Thursday, January 23.

The kidnappers demanded a large ransom in cryptocurrency without specifying the amount or saying whether the ransom had been paid.

Balland was released on Wednesday and received medical treatment from emergency services.

The rescue operation involved GIGN, one of France's elite tactical police units, and police continue to carry out investigations to identify and arrest all the perpetrators.

Ledger, founded in 2014, is one of France's leading crypto companies. He sells "hardware wallets" - physical devices to store crypto assets. Balland is one of the eight founders, the company's website says.

In 2021, Ledger raised 380 million US dollars in a funding round worth 1.5 billion US dollars.
