Compete With Tesla, GM Will Build 40,000 Charging Stations For Electric Cars In The US And Canada

JAKARTA - General Motors said on Tuesday, October 26 that it will install up to 40,000 electric vehicle charging stations in the United States and Canada. The project, as part of the automaker's US$750 million commitment to increase its presence in the fast-growing sector.

The announcement comes just months after the No. 1 in the US said it had signed agreements with several companies to offer its customers access to nearly 60,000 charging points in the same region.

The company said Tuesday that it will expand its charging infrastructure at home, work, and public through its Ultium Charge 360 ecosystem. GM added that they will focus on installing them in rural and urban areas with limited access to support widespread EV adoption.

Amazingly, the charging station will work for all EV customers, and not just those who bought a vehicle from GM, the automaker said.

Earlier this month, GM said it plans to double its revenue by 2030, suggesting it could build a lucrative software-based service that could take over Elon Musk's Tesla Inc.

The company's market capitalization of US$83.85 billion, however, remains well behind Tesla, which surpassed US$1 trillion (IDR 14,167 trillion) by stock market value on Monday, October 25 following the largest-ever order from car rental company Hertz to Tesla.

GM earlier this month said it plans to spend $35 billion by 2025 on EVs and autonomous vehicles.
