Xiaomi Targets Electric Car Production in 2024

JAKARTA - The plan to make an electric car made by Xiaomi seems to have found a bright spot again. The company says it will soon mass-produce its own cars in the first half of 2024.

The news was conveyed directly by Xiaomi Corp Chief Executive Lei Jun during an investor event recently, and was first reported by local media which was later confirmed by the company.

In fact, the director at Xiaomi's international marketing department, Zang Ziyuan, also uploaded the information on his official Weibo account. The development marks the next major target for the company's electric vehicle (EV) division, which Xiaomi officially announced earlier this year.

Compiled from Reuters, Tuesday, October 19, after the announcement of this car's production plan, shares of the Chinese mobile phone maker jumped nearly 5.4 percent. Previously in September, the company officially registered its EV product with a capital of 10 billion yuan or equivalent to IDR 21.9 billion with Lei Jun as the company's legal representative.

At the same time, Xiaomi has bought up 300 staff and plans to hire more people for its new business. Even so, Xiaomi has not explained further about what types of electric vehicles will be produced by them. Most likely, the company will produce more affordable electric vehicles for its home country and global market.

Not only Xiaomi, but mobile phone manufacturers from the same country Oppo is also planning to make electric cars. In fact, they are said to have applied for a trademark called "OCAR", which is currently awaiting substantive examination.
