Jokowi Inaugurates The Second Most Modern Steel Factory In The World

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo inaugurated a steel factory owned by PT Krakatau Steel (Persero) Tbk in Banten. In his remarks, Jokowi said that this factory is the second most modern in the world.

This factory has a hot-rolled coil (HRC) production capacity of 1.5 million tons per year. This is the first factory in Indonesia capable of producing premium quality HRC.

"Today we will witness the inauguration of Hot Strip Mill #2 from PT Krakatau Steel which uses the modern and latest technology in the steel industry and there are only two in the world, the first in the United States and the second in Indonesia, namely in Krakatau Steel. I have looked into the production process and it's really high technology," said Jokowi in the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube video, Tuesday, September 21.

Jokowi targets steel production at the Krakatau Steel plant to reach 4 million tons per year. Thus, the operation of this steel plant will meet domestic needs.

With the desire to reduce steel imports, Jokowi hopes that this steel factory can save foreign exchange of IDR 29 trillion per year.

"So we are no longer doing imports, this is what we hope for. So that once again it will suppress our country's steel imports, which are currently ranked second for Indonesia's imported commodities," said Jokowi.

Jokowi advised that the quality of the products produced is not inferior to imported products, can meet the needs of the industrial world in Indonesia. He believes this factory will become a commodity that can compete in regional and global markets.

"I entrust the Ministers to continue to support the steel and iron industry players, support our SOEs to become professional and continue to be profitable to realize this 10 million tonne steel industry cluster in Cilegon, which is targeted to be realized in 2025," he concluded.
