Starting To Realize, Sony Is Now Developing New E-Sports-friendly Features
JAKARTA - Sony is planning a new esports-friendly feature for the PlayStation 5. The company has been known to never pay attention to e-sports, but this time it looks like Sony is starting to look into the online sports business.
To get there, Sony, recently filed a new patent for the PS5 tournament system, which will allow players to easily set up online tournaments without the use of third-party software.
With this system, Sony believes that players will be able to host small tournaments with friends or large events with lots of games and a large number of participants. This feature is very interesting to see as well as its function and how the system will work.
Online tournament integration allows tournaments to be hosted by individuals, developers, and other vendors. Providing online tournament integration may involve simple tools to set up and run tournaments at the platform level while providing visibility into specific games.

Furthermore, users can use the tool to organize small tournaments with friends who are regular players, while event planners can use the tool to run large tournaments with many participants, with complex rules, and even involving [multiple] titles of games.
According to sources, the feature allows players to set up teams, send invites, schedule matches, and more via a “gaming network platform” (possibly the PlayStation Network).
Organizers will be able to customize tournaments using several parameters, which include “title of the game to be played, type of tournament (e.g. single elimination, double elimination, Swiss system, round-robin, deathmatch, racing), bracket type, match type, timeframe, number of participants, participation parameters, match duration, level of competition, specific maps to be played, and/or strategies to be applied.”
Sony also recently bought the fighting game championship EVO. EVO 2021 will kick off on August 6th, and we can expect an official announcement of this new feature from Sony during the event. Stay tuned for more info.
