Forward As A Candidate For The Secretary General Of The United Nations, Rafael Grossi: United Nations Needs Change

JAKARTA - Head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi confirmed his readiness to run as a candidate for the United Nations Secretary-General, said the world body needed change.

In a briefing at New York United Nations Headquarters, Grossi confirmed his intention to run for Antonio Guterres, whose term of office will expire by the end of 2026,

Grossi said his belief could "provide a contribution at this important moment" to the organization.

"I think we all agree that the United Nations needs change," Grossi told Arab News, as quoted October 30.

"What makes me decide to run is exactly what I did at the IAEA: leading the organization through difficult times, dealing with crises, and continuing to provide results," he said.

Grossi added he would discuss his candidacy further "when the time comes," in line with procedures set by the General Assembly and the UN Security Council.

To declare the nomination will not affect his current role, Grossi stressed he is ready to discuss the matter "with anyone."

"What I am doing as the leader of the IAEA speaks more than words, vision, promises, and ideas that I can have about how good a Secretary General is," he explained, quoted from Anadolu.

It is known that the election for the new UN Secretary General will be held next year and his term of office will begin on January 1, 2027.
