The Case Of Timothy Anugerah Saputra: Be Social Media Wise To Create Safe Space On Campus

JAKARTA The suicide incident committed by Timothy Anugerah Saputra is in the public spotlight because he is suspected of being bullied or bullied on campus.

Timothy was found dead on Wednesday (15/10/2025) in the campus area. This incident left deep sorrow not only for the families of the victims, but also for the community. Moreover, there are allegations that he committed suicide due to bullying by friends on campus.

Based on information circulating, Timothy, student of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Unud died after falling from the fourth floor of the FISIP building on Wednesday. Although he was taken to Prof. Dr. IGNG Ngoerah Hospital (SALAH), his life could not be saved.

This case became public attention because there was an allegation that Timothy was suspected of being a victim of bullying by fellow Unud students. The allegation that Timothy was a victim of bullying from her campus friends emerged after it was revealed that the conversation between students across Unud Facilities in the Whatsapp group.

In the conversation on the Whatsapp group, it was discovered that there was an inappropriate and irresponsible conversation, because it contained ridicule or ridicule to Timothy.

Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Brian Yuliarto expressed his deep sorrow for the death of Timothy Anugerah Saputra.

"We are very concerned and convey our deep condolences to the family of Timothy Anugerah Saputra and the extended family of Udayana University. We have communicated directly with the Unud rector. We have also asked the campus to coordinate with the families of the victims," said Brian.

Until now, the exact cause of Timothy's death is not known. The investigative team is still investigating the cause of death whether an accident, suicide, or related to bullying.

University of Indonesia criminologist Haniva Hasna said, basically making a conclusion from a case should not precede the facts. This means that when a case is suspected of murder or suicide occurs, it must first be known the facts.

"Because there is still a lot to be examined, the statement that this murder or suicide case is still very, very premature," said Haniva.

But Timothy's death made the public suspicious that she was a victim of bullying. This allegation strengthened after a number of Unud students who mocked the death of the victim released an apology video on social media accounts and went viral.

According to a number of sources, at least seven Unud students uploaded apologies for inappropriate behavior in responding to Timothy's death. They also stated that they were willing to accept and bear sanctions and consequences from the campus.

Unud has also made announcements regarding conversations in Whatsapp groups that have already been spread on social media. According to them, the content of conversations on social media occurred after Timothy died, not before the incident.

"Thus, nirempati words circulating on social media are not related or the cause of the deceased dropping himself from the top floor of the FISIP Building," said Unud's written press release and quoted on Saturday.

This is not the first time the alleged case of bullying has been experienced by students in the campus environment.

On April 28, 2025, a student of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Lampung (Unila), Pratama Wijaya Kusuma, after months of illness. There are allegations that he was abused by seniors while attending basic education (disar) of nature-loving student organizations in November 2024.

Campuses, like other educational institutions, should be a safe space and free from all forms of violence or bullying.

This was also stated by the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto. He emphasized that campuses must be a safe and free space for all forms of violence and bullying. This refers to the Regulation of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Permendikbudristek) Number 55 of 2024 concerning the Prevention and Handling of Violence in Higher Education (PPKPT).

"We support universities to create safe spaces on campus so that students can learn, grow, and excel without fear," said Brian.

In the current era of social media, it is important to apply caution so that what is uploaded does not defame or offend other people. It is not certain whether Timothy is a victim of bullying or not. Is his death related to the alleged bullying.
