Sri Mulyani Affirms The Climate Crisis Is More Dangerous Than The COVID-19 Pandemic In Today's Memory, September 14, 2022

JAKARTA Memories of today, three years ago, September 14, 2022, Minister of Finance (Menkeu), Sri Mulyani emphasized that the climate crisis is more dangerous than the COVID-19 pandemic. This condition is because the impact of climate change can trigger bad, from natural disasters to economic damage.

Previously, climate change was threatening the whole world. The increase in the earth's temperature has the potential to bring all disasters. Indonesia's response was also highlighted a lot. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) while considering climate change as a common problem.

Climate change is the latest issue around the world. Changes in temperature and weather patterns are starting to be considered a threat to the existence of the earth and its entirety. The disaster of climate change is starting to be felt. The emergence of many disasters which exacerbated climate change is happening everywhere.

Take, for example, drought and floods that occur more frequently. Not to mention the contribution of climate change that has made many small islands sink. However, countries in the world refuse to give up. They want to reduce the impact of climate change.

Efforts to adapt and mitigate disasters are encouraged. Adaptation itself is a step of self-completion with the adverse effects of a disaster. Mitigation efforts are carried out to reduce the impact arising from disasters. This commitment is stated in the holding of a high-level climate change conference every year.

Other countries are different from Indonesia. President Jokowi from the 2020s revealed that Indonesia has a big commitment to reducing the impact of climate change. However, the reality says otherwise. Illegal logging is still happening.

Large-scale land clearing is still visible. The government does not have enough commitment to take part in the agenda of saving the environment. The President of the United States, Joe Biden, predicts that Jakarta will sink in the next 10 years from 2021.

Environmental experts also consider Joe Biden's statement not to be underestimated. This is because in the past few years Indonesia has lost several small islands. The government is asked to respond to climate change as an emergency as the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Because now the situation is we (must) see this climate disaster as an emergency situation, so the handling processes must also have emergency efforts, which are almost equivalent to the current cases of the COVID-19 pandemic".

"So the pattern of mitigation and adaptation must also be a priority at this time. Because it is part of a disaster, because it is regulated at this time," said environmental observer Yani Sagaroa as quoted by VOI, August 2, 2021.

Jokowi may not see climate change as a threat. However, the Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani, actually has a different view. Sri emphasized that the climate crisis is much more dangerous than the COVID-19 pandemic. The threat of a climate crisis in Indonesia is not playing big games.

Sri predicts that all sectors will be affected by the climate crisis. In fact, climate change can make the Indonesian economy fall to its lowest level. Sri also demanded that President Jokowi immediately take a stand to reduce emissions.

This condition is so that a terrible crisis will not occur in the years to come. Sri tries to convince many people that recently disasters such as floods and drought most often occur. The narrative marks a climate crisis sooner or later will come.

"Climate change is a global threat that actually affects social, economic and more significantly affects the world more than the COVID-19 pandemic. It is estimated that Indonesia's potential economic loss due to climate change will be around 0.6-3.45 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030".

"So our policy document states that economic losses due to this climate crisis will reach Rp112.2 trillion or 0.5 percent of GDP in 2023, namely next year. We are all aware that climate change, or perhaps more precisely referred to as a climate crisis, poses a serious threat to mankind, the economy, the financial system and our way of life," Sri Mulyani said as quoted on the detik.com page, September 14, 2022.
