Police Thwart The Smuggling Of 11.8 Kg Of Crystal Methamphetamine In Bakauheni, Two Couriers From Aceh Arrested

JAKARTA - Attempts to smuggle narcotics again were thwarted at the Sumatra 'Java crossing. Two men from Aceh who acted as couriers were arrested while carrying dozens of kilograms of crystal methamphetamine in the Bakauheni area, South Lampung. The action was uncovered thanks to reports from bus crews who were suspicious of their movements.

The South Lampung Police Narcotics Investigation Unit then moved quickly and managed to secure 11.8 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine evidence.

"From the results of the examination, it is true that the two suspects brought 11 packages of methamphetamine with a total gross weight of 11,827 grams which were stored in a backpack. They claimed to be ordered to deliver these illicit goods to Jakarta," said South Lampung Police Narcotics Head, AKP Widodo Prasojo, in Kalianda, as quoted by ANTARA.

The arrest occurred when the Medan 'Jakarta bus carrying the perpetrator stopped at a restaurant in Kelawi Village, Bakauheni District. The police then arrested two men, namely Edi Murtaza (31), a laborer from Cot Lagawa Village, Kuala District, Bireuen Regency, and Hendri Azwar (30), a farmer from the same village. From their brown backpack, 11 packs of methamphetamine were found with a total weight of 11,827 grams.

The results of the examination showed that the two were only couriers who were ordered to bring narcotics from Aceh to Jakarta. The confiscated evidence is estimated to be worth Rp. 11.8 billion and is said to be able to save around 59 thousand lives from the threat of drug abuse.

For their actions, the two suspects were charged with Article 112 paragraph (2), Article 114 paragraph (2), in conjunction with Article 132 paragraph (1) of Law no. 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics, with a minimum penalty of 5 years and a maximum of 20 years in prison.

"We will continue to tighten supervision, especially at the Bakauheni Port crossing which is often used as an entry point for cross-provincial narcotics networks," said Widodo.
