BMKG Urges Residents To Be Alert To Extreme Weather In Maluku

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of the Pattimura Ambon Class II Meteorological Station urged the public to be aware of the potential for extreme weather, heavy rain to very heavy rain. Rain is predicted to be accompanied by lightning and strong winds in a number of areas in Maluku.

"Moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds for a moment of more than 30 km per hour, has the potential to occur in Ambon City, South Buru Regency, Central Maluku, West Seram Regency (SBB)," said the Head of BMKG Class II Meteorological Station Pattimura Ambon, Kamari in Ambon, as quoted by Antara, Thursday, May 6.

Based on the analysis of climatological data, several areas in Maluku are currently entering the rainy season, including Ambon City, South Buru Regency, Central Maluku, West Seram Regency (SBB).

The results of the Streamline analysis show that the wind pattern is dominated by the easterly wind.

Sea surface temperature conditions tend to warm, especially in the Banda Sea and Seram Sea.

"This is very supportive of the supply of water vapor for the growth of rain clouds," he continued.

According to him, locally the growth of rain clouds (Cumulonimbus) which causes moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds (strong for a moment) still has the potential to occur.

Because of that, he said, the public is urged to remain vigilant about the potential for extreme weather.

During the rainy season, and the impact of hydrometeorological disasters that can occur, such as puddles, floods, lands, landslides, flash floods, and fallen trees.
