Pope Francis Dies, Was Treated For Having Bilateral Pneumonia

JAKARTA - Pope Francis, leader of the Catholics and head of state of the Vatican, has passed away. This news was conveyed by the Vatican on Monday, April 21, 2025.

"Dear brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must inform you of the death of Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Holy Father," wrote the Vatican, quoted by VOI from the Vatican News page, on Monday, April 21, 2025.

Before he died, Pope Francis still had time to celebrate Easter in St. Peter's Basilica, on Sunday, April 20, 2025. He also called for a ceasefire that had to be carried out in Gaza at that time.

However, at the Easter celebration, Pope Francis' body condition was said to be weak. Previously he had been hospitalized for bilateral pneumonia since February 14, 2025.

Bilateral pneumonia is a condition when a person is infected with pneumonia in both lungs. Pneumonia is an infection that causes inflammation in the air bag of the lungs, which can cause it to fill with liquid.

Pneumonia will usually be a very serious condition for certain groups, ranging from babies and people over 65 years of age. In Pope Francis, the disease causes his body to experience severe conditions because he is 88 years old.

After being treated for 38 days in hospital, Pope Francis returned to his residence at the Vatican in Casa Santa Marta to continue his recovery. The Pope's previous health condition was reported to have improved, until it was reported that he had died.
