Nail Conditions Can Reveal Signs Of Aging In The Body
JAKARTA - Did you know nails can be an indicator of health and longevity? According to Dr. David Sinclair, a genetics expert from Harvard Medical School, nail growth reflects how fast the body experiences aging.
In her podcast show, Dr. Sinclair explains that nails that grow faster indicate better cell regeneration, which is associated with aging slower or longer. On the other hand, slow nail growth can show faster aging.
"The rate of growth in your nails is a very good indicator of whether you are aging or not," said Dr. Sinclair, quoted from the Times of India page.
With age, the rate of nail growth decreases by about 0.5% per year after the age of 30. This occurs due to reduced blood circulation, which causes the nails to become more dull, fragile, or yellowing.
In addition to age factors, the growth and appearance of nails can also be influenced by nutrients and hormones. For example, nails tend to grow faster duringturbation or pregnancy. The shape, line, or color change in nails can also be a sign of iron deficiency, kidney disease, or other health problems.

In fact, some serious diseases such as cancer can affect the condition of the nails. Black spots under the nails can be a sign of melanoma, while white spots can indicate a lack of zinc, calcium, or iron.
There is also a condition called nail clubbing, where nails widen and curl around the tip of the finger. This can be a sign of serious health problems, such as chronic heart disease or lungs.
How to check:
- Paste the tips of your thumb or index finger.
- If there is no diamond-shaped gap between the nails, it could be a sign of health problems.
Paying attention to the growth and condition of the nails can help detect signs of aging or health problems early.
