EU Leaders Warn Of The Risk Of Ceasefire In Ukraine Without Peaceful Deal

JAKARTA - A group of European leaders agreed at a meeting held in Paris, France on Monday that they were ready to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, but it would be dangerous to end a ceasefire without a peace agreement at the same time, an EU official said.

"We are ready to provide security guarantees, with the modalities to be studied with each side, depending on America's level of support," the official said, summarizing the results of the meeting in Paris.

The meeting was held by French President Emmanuel Macron after US President Donald Trump organized bilateral peace negotiations with Russia, without consultation with European allies, in which negotiations would begin in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

President Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez were among the leaders present at the meeting.

Also taking part were Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa.

"We agree with President Trump on the 'peace through power' approach," said the EU official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"We believe it is dangerous to conclude a ceasefire without a peace agreement at the same time," the official added.
