Former President Medvedev Ragukan Trump Can Quickly Resolve Russia-Ukraine Conflict
JAKARTA - Senior Moscow officials doubt Donald Trump could resolve the Russian-Ukraine conflict that has been going on since February 2022 in a short time, although it is possible Trump could play a role.
Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medveved said the Ukraine crisis did not seem to be resolved quickly, even through Trump's mediation, the President-elect of the United States who will be sworn in on January 20.
"I really don't know what Trump will do during his second term of office, but he certainly won't let anyone get bored from the start. The goal is clear: rapid success in resolving the Ukraine conflict seems unlikely, while the US economy continues with its slow pace and even the war against immigrants does not promise a big win. , wrote the former Russian President on Telegram, launching TASS January 9.
Trump, without elaborating, has repeatedly claimed to be able to stop the Russia-Ukraine war immediately.
In November, President Vladimir Putin said Trump's comments about ending the war in Ukraine deserve attention.
Meanwhile, last month Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Moscow was very likely to cooperate with the Trump Administration.
"Is it possible to cooperate with the Trump administration? It is definitely possible," he replied when asked about the potential for cooperation.
His comments are the latest signal that Moscow, after Trump took office, hopes for an increase in bilateral relations that the Kremlin currently says are "under zero".
At a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida last month Trump said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should be ready to make a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war between the two countries that has been going on since 2022.
"You have to make a deal," Trump said.
The Republican politician further said he would speak with Kremlin and Kyiv leaders to end the war, stressing he was disturbed by the pictures of the massacre of the conflict.
"This must be stopped," Trump said.
Trump did not give an immediate answer when asked if he believed Ukraine should hand over its territory to Russia as part of a negotiated settlement to end the war.
However, he said most of the disputed territory had become rubble and would take a century to recover it.
"I mean, there are cities that don't have buildings to stand on, they are the site of the destruction," he said.
