BPS Records Inflation In Papua, The Highest Mountains In Indonesia In December 2024

JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that 35 of the 38 provinces in Indonesia are experiencing inflation.

The highest inflation occurred in the Papua Province of the Mountains at 2.39 percent on a monthly basis (mtm).

Acting Head of BPS Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti said 35 provinces out of 38 provinces in Indonesia experienced inflation while 5 other provinces experienced deflation.

"Meanwhile, the deepest deflation occurred in Maluku at 0.41 percent," Amalia said at a press conference, Thursday, January 2.

As for other provinces that also recorded the highest monthly inflation in South Papua which was recorded at 1.24 percent, the third position was occupied by North Sumatra Province at 0.98 and East Nusa Tenggara at 1.82.

He further said that the distribution of inflation based on annual areas or year on year (yoy) occurred in almost all provinces, except for Gorontalo Province, which experienced deflation of 0.79 percent.

"The two commodities that contributed to the largest deflation in Gorontalo were cayenne pepper and tomatoes," added Amalia.

Not only mtm inflation, the highest yoy inflation is still occupied by the convex Papua Province, which is 5.36 percent with two commodities with the largest share of inflation being hand-kretek cigarettes and machine kretek cigarettes.

In the second position is occupied by Central Papua Province at 3.27 percent, West Papua at 2.53 percent, Bali at 2.34 and Aceh at 2.17.

Amalia further said that in the last 5 years the high inflation rate has generally occurred during the period of celebrating national religious holidays, including fasting and Christmas and New Year.

Meanwhile, at the moment of Christmas and New Year's December 2024, there was another inflation of 0.44 percent, higher than December 2023.

Based on the history of the last five years, every December, food, beverage and beverage groups have become the main components that contribute to inflation. Meanwhile, the component that has slowed inflation in December 2024 is the air transportation tariff commodity with a deflation contribution of 0.01 percent.
