Turkish Antitrust Authority Ends Meta Investigation On Threads Data

JAKARTA Turkey's business competition authority decided to stop investigating Meta Platforms Inc regarding the practice of sharing data between social media platform Threads and Instagram.

In its official statement, the competition board said that Meta had made enough commitment to address concerns over business competition. Therefore, the investigation, which began last year, was declared over.

One of the commitments proposed by Meta is to provide options for Threads users, both existing and new users, to create Threads profiles without having to have an Instagram account. This provision will apply when Threads are reaccessible in Turkey.

Meta also confirms that the data obtained from Threads will not be combined with Instagram data, unless the user chooses to connect both of their accounts.

The investigation into Meta stems from alleged violations of competition laws related to the integration of the two social media platforms. In April, Meta temporarily closed Threads services in Turkey to comply with interim orders from local authorities.
