Elon Musk's XAI Will Expand Colossus' Supercomputer In Memphis Up To 10 Times

JAKARTA Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup, xAI, plans to expand massively against their supercomputer, Colossus, in Memphis, Tennessee. According to a statement by Greater Memphis Chamber on Wednesday, December 4, the supercomputer capacity will be increased to accommodate at least one million units of GPU (graphics processing units). This step was taken to accelerate xAI's rivalry with competitors such as OpenAI.

Colossus' current supercomputer is equipped with 100,000 GPUs used to train xAI chatbots called Grok. In this expansion project, the Nvidia company will continue to supply GPUs, while Dell and Super Micro will be responsible for assembling the servers needed. The three companies also plan to build operations in Memphis as part of this collaboration.

This expansion move shows Elon Musk's big ambition in exploring his rivalry with OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. Last month, Musk expanded his lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that the company and Microsoft had carried out an illegal monopoly on the AI market.

However, this planned tenfold increase in the Colossus expansion project sparked environmental concerns. Activists and legislators have criticized the impact of the large energy generated by the data center.

In August, the Southern Environmental Law Center urged Tennessee officials to verify whether xAI is using gas turbines to help supply their supercomputer power without adequate environmental permits.

This big project is in the spotlight not only because of its technological ambitions but also the environmental impact that has the potential to arise from its operation.
