Perseverance Explore 'Pico Turquino' Area To Find Out The Situation Of Mars In The Past

JAKARTA Mars Perseverance rovers have arrived in the new area and will approach the rock area under the name Pico Turquino. A team of technicians from NASA is planning the approach process.

Perseverance is already parallel to Pico Turquino with a distance of 70 meters from his position. Before approaching, the team planned two remote sensing missions using two different instruments, namely Mastcam-Z and SuperCam.

Both are used to investigate the regolite on the surface of Mars, especially in the area called Pico Turquino. This area is 200 meters long and is full of rocks that are believed to show Martian state in the past.

"Here (Pico Turquino), the team hopes to investigate recorded history," NASA said. "The rock (in the region) can reveal clues to ancient geological processes including those preceding or related to the devastating impacts that formed the Jezero crater."

The exploration in this latest region will also help scientists to understand more deeply about the circumstances on the Red Planet. If possible, NASA wants to characterize the diversity of rock compositions and structures in Pico Turquino.

It is not explained how long Perseverance will be in the exposed Pico Turquino rock. NASA only revealed that the next termination site is Witchguell Hill. This area is believed to contain layered base rocks that store information about the planet's ancient climate.

"Before arriving at Witch Thug Hill, the rover plans to cross a high spot known as Lookout Hill which will give the team incredible views as it looks back at the crater, as well as a glimpse of the terrain west that goes far beyond Jezero," NASA explained.
