PMI Alert To Face The Peak Of The Rainy Season: Jusuf Kalla Instructions National Vigilance
MAKASSAR Chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), Jusuf Kalla, emphasized the importance of preparedness for the rainy season which is estimated to reach its peak in the next three months.
This statement was delivered in an online coordination meeting, Monday, November 25, based on a recent report from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
Jusuf Kalla instructed all PMI ranks to increase vigilance and prepare strategic steps to deal with potential disasters, such as floods, landslides, and other impacts.
"From now on we must be ready and guard our respective regions. As predicted by the BMKG, the peak of the rainy season will occur at the end of the year until early 2025. These are critical months. Keep coordination and cooperation with BMKG to monitor weather developments in disaster-prone areas," said Jusuf Kalla.
The BMKG reports that the peak of the rainy season will occur in western Indonesia from November to December 2024, while the eastern region will peak from January to February 2025.
BMKG also warns of potential hazards such as lava floods, especially in areas around the mountain with alert status, such as Mount Lewotobi Laki in East Nusa Tenggara.
Jusuf Kalla emphasized the importance of ensuring PMI equipment and infrastructure remain in optimal condition.
"All equipment must be checked and repaired if there is damage, starting from rubber boats, ambulances, water tankers, to other emergency response equipment. Volunteers must also be prepared so that we can help the community optimally," he said.
Currently, PMI has mobilized various resources, including 190 clean water tanks, to help areas affected by drought and flooding. PMI posts and call centers were also alerted to receive reports from the public.
In addition to disaster response, Jusuf Kalla encouraged regional PMIs to collaborate with local governments, companies, and the community in preventing disasters. This includes mapping potential disasters and environmental cleanliness campaigns.
The sewers and culverts must be cleaned in mutual cooperation. PMI can involve local entrepreneurs to provide tools such as shovels and hoes to support cleanliness and sanitation," he added.
