Mozambique Police Fire Tear Gas Into Hundreds Of Opposition Supporters Protesting Election Results
JAKARTA - Mozambique police fired tear gas at hundreds of opposition supporters gathered in the capital Maputo in the biggest demonstration against the disputed elections last month.
As reported by Reuters on Thursday, November 7, human rights groups said 18 people had died in a police crackdown on protests since the October 9 vote, which extended the power of the ruling party Frelimo for five decades.
Opposition parties, civil society groups and Western observers say this election is unfair and the results can be changed.
Frelimo's spokesman did not respond to a request for response regarding this incident.
The party was also accused of cheating in the previous election and denied it.
