Komnas: A Section Campaign In The 2024 Pilkada Is Used To Seek Public Attention

JAKARTA - The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) views the statements of sexism, women's subordination, and sexual violence in the implementation of the campaign for the 2024 Pilkada candidates to be used as a campaign tool to reap public attention.

"This discrimination or sexism is used as a campaign tool to get public attention," said Komnas Perempuan member Siti Aminah Tardi in an online press conference in Jakarta, Thursday, November 7, which was confiscated by Antara.

Siti said that Komnas Perempuan defines violence against women in holding elections as all forms of violence aimed at women.

"Women or violence that influence women disproportionately because of their participation and/or aspiration to get public office and/or engage in political activities in holding elections," he said.

His party gave an example of the statement by the candidate for Deputy Governor of Jakarta number 1 asking rich widows to marry unemployed. Then the prospective Independent Governor in DKI Jakarta who stated that the female teacher was deliberately placed in Kindergarten to prepare children to become part of the LGBT community.

There was also a candidate for Deputy Governor of Banten who stated that women should not be given a heavy burden, let alone be governors.

"Or billboards or posters with a sexist tone from the candidate pair for Regent and Deputy Regent of Sleman Harda Kiswaya and Danang Maharda who said they chose the priest in the sense of a leader, how come wedok or a woman. Don't do it Dik, the priest must be a man. Which means if you choose it must be a man, not a woman," said Siti Aminah Tardi.

Komnas Perempuan also highlighted the closing statement in the open debate of the candidate for governor and deputy governor of Maluku who connoted sexually.

"This violence is aimed at limiting, obstructing, and weakening women so that they are not equal in choosing, selecting, running for themselves, campaigning, associating associations, expressing, or arguing for themselves. We view this as categorized as a form of violence against women in holding elections," said Siti.
