Ambassador Danon: Israel Will Cooperate With Humanitarian Organizations That Do Not Promote Terrorism
JAKARTA - Israel's top diplomat welcomed the revocation of recognition of UNRWA, saying its country would cooperate with other humanitarian aid groups.
Israel's ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon welcomed the revocation of the 1967 agreement by Israel, an agreement that became the basis for Israel's relations with the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.
"Although we have submitted a lot of evidence to the United Nations supporting Hamas' infiltration to UNRWA, the UN has done nothing to improve the situation," Ambassador Danon said in a post on social media.
"The Israeli state will continue to cooperate with humanitarian organizations but not with organizations promoting terrorism against us," he added.
As previously reported, Israel's Foreign Ministry has officially notified the United Nations that the country withdrew from a 1967 agreement recognizing the Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA, after Knesset passed legislation to strictly restrict the agency's operations in Israel and its occupied territories.
Director-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jacob Blitshtein sent a letter to UN General Assembly President Philemon Yang of Cameroon, notifying "Israel will continue to cooperate with international partners, including other United Nations agencies, to ensure facilitation of humanitarian aid for civilians in Gaza in a way that does not jeopardize Israel's security. Israel expects the United Nations to contribute and cooperate in this endeavor."
Last week, Knesset passed a bill banning UNRWA from operating from Israeli territory and banned Israeli government agencies from cooperating with UNRWA. The bill will take effect in the coming three months.
