Systemic Octopus Corruption: Criminal Law Experts Call For Reconstruction Of Positions At The Supreme Court

JAKARTA - Criminal Law expert at Trikosakti University, Dr. Azmi Syahputra, emphasized the need for a restructuring of positions at the Supreme Court (MA) to overcome the systemic spread of corruption. He stated, "The chairman of the Supreme Court must immediately reconstruct his position due to the systematic octopus corruption that occurred within the Supreme Court." This statement underscores the urgency of handling the problem that has resulted in the image of the legal institution being tarnished.

Dr. Azmi explained that this case involved five aspects of interconnected crime. "This action consists of corruption (bribery or gratuity), Money Laundering (TPPU), taxation issues, conspiracy, and continuing acts," he said when he came to the editor VOI.id, in Jakarta, Thursday, October 31. With the existing situation, the alleged sale and purchase of positions within the Supreme Court is also getting stronger.

Recent findings suggest the existence of nearly Rp1 trillion and 51 kilograms of gold in Zarof Ricar's house, one of the former officials at the Supreme Court, reinforces the notion of an organized corruption network. The search conducted by the Attorney General's Office on October 29, 2024 revealed significant results.

Seeing this condition, Dr. Azmi emphasized the importance of an in-depth investigation by the Attorney General's Office. He suggested that this case be traced back in time, around 2010, to find conspiracy and modus operandi of crimes that have occurred over the years. "It is important to uncover the involvement of other parties who may be involved in this illegal practice," he explained.

Dr. Azmi also reminded that the role of judicial institutions is vital in eradicating corruption. Therefore, he encouraged the Chairman of the Supreme Court to take firm and responsible steps in cleaning up the institution. Reconstruction of positions in the Supreme Court is not only necessary, but also a momentum to build integrity and quality of justice personnel," he said.

Because of that, Dr. Azmi emphasized the importance of ensuring that judges and civil servants (ASN) in the Supreme Court have high competence and integrity. Only with measurable and bold steps can the Supreme Court restore public trust and restore its image as a clean and integrity law enforcement agency.
