Yemen's Houthis Target Greek-Operated Ships, Attacks Reportedly Failed

JAKARTA - The Yemeni Houthi group is targeting a Liberian-flagged ship operated by Greece. But all three attacks on the ship failed, maritime security sources said.

The attack on Monday, October 28 was the first against commercial vessels in recent weeks, following an increase in Israeli attacks on Gaza and Lebanon this month.

Iran's Iran-aligned Houthi militant military spokesman Yahya Sarea said the attack on the ship identified as Motaro was part of their efforts to enforce a sea blockade against Israel.

Britain's Maritime Trade Operations Agency said on Monday it received information about three explosions related to the incident of 25 nautical miles south of Mokha port in Yemen. The ship and its crew survived and continued their journey to the next port.

The Houthi group also carried out two attacks on Liberian-flagged ships in the Arabian Sea on Monday.

They identified the ship as SC Montreal and Maersk Kawloon. The incident could not be confirmed by Reuters and their manager could not be reached for comment.

The Houthi group in Yemen said they would continue to carry out attacks on commercial ships until Israel stops its attacks on Gaza and Lebanon.

Since November, the Houthis have carried out nearly 100 attacks on ships crossing the Red Sea, which is an important path to global trade linking the Red Sea to Aden Bay. They have sunk two ships, seized another ship and killed four sailors.
