A rare stabbing in Beijing occurred at around 3:20 p.m. local time near the intersection of Wanquanzhuang Street and Wanliu Zhong Street in Haidian District, the report said.
The suspect, a 50-year-old man surnamed Tang, was stationed under police control, and five pedestrians injured in the attack were taken to hospital.
None of their life-threatening injuries, the report added, with the investigation continuing.
The location of the attack was where one of the branches of the Zhongguancun Elementary School No.3 was located. Social media uploads say the stabbing took place outside the school gate, which has yet to be confirmed by local police or state media.
The school, one of Beijing's best primary schools, has not responded to the incident.
