An Easy AI Open Source Model To Access Become A Two-eyed Knife, How Come?

JAKARTA - A principal at East Ventures, Wasley Tay who is also one of the panelists in the Tech in Asia 2024 discussion panel sees that many open source models that are easily accessible to everyone can be a double-edged knife.

Because according to him, not only in developing countries such as Indonesia, that in the United States or China, many open source models and easy-to-use cloud platforms can democratize AI.

It's just that Wasley explained that this convenience would then allow startups, including in Indonesia, to take advantage of AI without having to have a large AI research team.

"The problem is that they make it easier for startups to integrate whatever products they have, to integrate their products into startups," Wasley said on Wednesday, October 23 in Jakarta.

Thus, it can be concluded that the ability to apply AI into existing products and services is more important than the ability to build an AI model from scratch.

"I think we see that AI is a tool. If you don't know how to make the tool, I don't think it's a problem, because it's someone else who made the tool, but how do you use the tool to put it in your product," he explained.

Wasley also highlighted the importance of cultural understanding in AI development. According to him, the bigger gap lies in how companies in Indonesia can understand market needs and develop AI products that are relevant to local culture.
