French Publisher Again Urges Apple To Stop Distraction Control Features

JAKARTA A consortium of publishers and advertising companies in France has again sent a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook asking the company to stop the Distraction Control feature. This request came after a similar letter in May 2024 was ignored by Apple.

Distraction Control, formerly known as Web Eraser, allows Safari users to remove elements of websites they don't want to see, with ads being the main target.

The consortium consisting of organizations such as Alliance Digitale and Alliance de la Presse d'Information Generale considers this feature a serious threat to online advertising models that support the internet economy.

Although Apple did not respond to the previous letter, this feature remains rolling out with the explanation that Distraction Control will not completely eliminate ads permanently.

However, this time the group warned that it was considering all available legal remedies, including involving the European Commission. This latest letter was also sent to the European Commission, which is known to be currently reviewing various Apple business practices.

Apple has yet to comment on the letter.
