Hitting The Land, The Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency Claims The Seroja Tropical Cyclone In East Nusa Tenggara Is Fierce And Unusual

JAKARTA - Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati said that the Seroja tropical cyclone that occurs in East Nusa Tenggara is not common. This is because previously this cyclone had never been to the mainland.

"This is the first time that this Seroja is truly amazing because it reaches the mainland. This is unusual", said Dwikorita in a press conference broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat YouTube channel, Tuesday, April 6.

She said that this cyclone is suspected of being in an unusual condition due to the effects of global warming. Although it is only a hypothesis, Dwikorita stated that the warmer the sea surface temperature, the sea will absorb carbon dioxide or Co2.

With this condition, she asked all parties to mitigate or reduce the impact of global warming. Because, if this is not done, the disasters that occur in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) can occur continuously and even become annual disasters.

"If not, (mitigated, red) this cyclone condition will become a routine event every year and become a normal thing. This is what we must anticipate together", she said.

Furthermore, Dwikorita said that this cyclone would improve in the next few days. The BMKG, she said, predicts that after April 7, the cyclone of Seroja, which causes extreme weather, will stay away.

Meanwhile, the public is asked to remain vigilant because, until April 7, heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds will continue to occur.

"But after that, God willing, the prediction is that the weather situation will get better. However, the waves in the oceans still have high potential. So we must also be careful in the oceans, even though the land will be calmer, the waves will still be getting higher", said Dwikorita.

As previously reported, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) asked to continue to anticipate the dangers of extreme weather in the country. He also asked the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to intensify extreme weather warnings due to sacred tropical cyclones.

He conveyed this when giving directions in a limited meeting to discuss disaster management in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Provinces via a video conference at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.

"I ask for anticipation of the continued danger of extreme weather occurring in various regions in Indonesia and I also ask the BMKG to intensify warnings about extreme weather due to this tropical cyclone", said Jokowi as broadcasted on the YouTube channel of the Presidential Secretariat, Tuesday, April 6.

So that each regional head and the community can anticipate the dangers of extreme weather, the former Governor of DKI Jakarta also asked the BMKG to ensure that all available information can be accessed and monitored easily.

The goal is so that all parties can increase their awareness of the dangers of aftershocks due to extreme weather that occurs. "They must know everything so that people can increase their preparedness and vigilance to face the threat of risks, both strong winds, floods, and landslides", he said.
