Freeport Smelter In Gresik Burns, No Casualties
PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) confirmed the fire that occurred at the sulfate acid factory located in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Gresik, East Java (East Java), Monday, at 17.45 WIB.
This was conveyed by PT Freeport Indonesia's VP of Corporate Communications, Katri Krisnati via a short message today, Monday, October 14.
"There has been a fire at the PTFI smelter sulfate factory, at the Gresik SEZ, on Monday, October 14, 2024 at 17.45 WIB," he said when confirmed by VOI, Monday, October 14.
He added that the PTFI emergency response team moved quickly and was trying to extinguish the blaze. Katri also confirmed that there were no casualties in the incident.
"There were no casualties in this incident. The safety of the employees is our priority," said Katri.
For information, President Joko Widodo inaugurated the first copper cathode production from the second PTFI smelter on Monday, September 23.
The smelter is the world's largest single-line design copper refining facility, equipped with the main facilities of a tembang smelting and refining plant with a precious metal refining unit as well as various supporting facilities.

The main products of smelters are copper cathodes, pure gold and silver bars, and PGM (Platinum Group Metal).
Side products include sulfic acid, gypsum, and lead. The existence of this facility ensures that all copper concentrate produced by PTFI is fully processed and purified domestically.
