US Navy Intercepts Houthi Attack On Warships In The Red Sea

JAKARTA - The US Navy intercepted a Houthi attack launched on three of its warships in the Red Sea.

The attack on Thursday, September 26, became one of the biggest attacks on US warships operating in the Middle East, one official said.

Reported by CNN, Friday, September 27, the attack was launched from a group of rebels backed by Iran against two guided-missile destroyers (USS Spruance and USS Stockdale) and coastal warships (USS Indianapolis) as they traveled north via the Bab El-Mandeb strait. This line connects Aden Bay with the Red Sea.

Houthi military spokesman Brigadier General Yehya Saree said the US ships were targeted while on their way.

Saree said the attack involved a total of 23 projectiles, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones, and was launched by the Navy, Air Force, and the Houthi Missile Force.

Saree insists the operation resulted in a "direct attack", a claim rejected by the two US officials.

Since the start of the war in Gaza, the Houthis have carried out a series of attacks on US warships and commercial vessels they claim are linked to Israel.

In December 2023, the USS Carney shot down 14 Houthi drones targeting guided-missile destroyers. When Carney returned to his country months later, the US Navy Commander said the ship had carried out more enemy attacks than any other ship since World War II.

Then in February, the Houthi cruise missile was within a one-mile distance of the USS Gravely destroyer, forcing it to use Gatling's defense weapon, dubbed the Navy's last defense line.
