China Adds CCTV Cameras Around Japanese Schools After Stabbing Who Killed 10-Year-Old Students

JAKARTA - Chinese authorities completed the installation of additional security cameras around Japanese schools in Shenzen City in the country's south on Friday.

The CCTV installation followed calls from Japan regarding increased security, after a fatal stabbing of a 10-year-old who caused him to die, reported by Kyodo News on September 20.

Installation of additional security cameras near schools and crime scenes began on Thursday morning.

Previously, a student whose father was Japanese and his mother from China, was stabbed about 200 meters from the school gate on Wednesday morning. Injured in his stomach, he died on Thursday morning, according to the Japanese Government.

Local authorities have not disclosed the motive of the 44-year-old suspect.

Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Sun Weidong told Japanese Ambassador to China Kenji Kanasugi on Thursday the attack was a "separate incident" carried out by an individual with a criminal record, according to the Japanese Embassy in Beijing.

Ambassador Kanasugi met on the same day as Deputy Mayor Shenzhen Luo Huanghao, calling for stricter security to ensure the safety of Japanese citizens.

A Shenzhen media report said on Friday the suspect, surnamed Zhong, had admitted to having injured the boy with a knife and local authorities believed he was acting alone.

The report also said the unemployed man had been detained twice before in the past in connection with alleged sabotage of public telecommunications facilities and disturbing public order.

It is known that prior to Wednesday's stabbing, a knife attack took place in Suzhou near Shanghai in June, causing a Japanese mother and child to be injured. A Chinese woman died while trying to stop the assailant.
