Kaspersky: Minecraft Becomes The Most Frequent Game To Target Cyber Attacks
JAKARTA - Kaspersky's security solution managed to detect more than 6.6 million attempted attacks, in which cybercriminals exploited child game brands as bait, during the period July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2024.
Of the 18 games selected for research, most of the attacks targeted Minecraft, Roblox, and Among Us games. Where, there were more than 3 million attempted attacks under Minecraft launched during that period.
According to Kaspersky, most likely, cybercriminals choose this attack method based on the popularity of games among players, as well as gamers' ability to use cheats and mods.
According to their experts, the success rate of attacks in 2024 is getting higher because the attacks launched are increasingly sophisticated, especially with AI technology, to automate and personalize phishing attacks that are more likely to attract young gamers.
In addition, they also found that one of the most common scams in the game was an offer to accept new skins for the character of the players. Some of the general skins, while others are rare skins, so more people are tempted by this offer.

In addition, another popular trap is an offer to accept the currency in the game. In one of the scams that Kaspersky found exploiting the Pokémon GO brand, users were asked to enter usernames for their game accounts. Furthermore, they were asked to follow the survey to prove that they are not bots.
After the survey is complete, they are directed to fake websites, usually those that promise free prizes or lotterys. Later, this whole process is a smart way to direct users to other more dangerous scams under the guise of legal verification measures.
