Indian Police Fire Tear Gas Disperse Demonstrators In Rape And Murder Cases Of Doctors

JAKARTA - Police in India fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse hundreds of protesters gathered in Kolkata to demand the resignation of a state minister after the horrific rape and murder of doctors.

As reported by Reuters on Tuesday, August 27, the students led by students broke through iron barricades mounted on their route to the West Bengal state secretariat, according to television shows.

The case of rape and murder on August 9 against a 31-year-old doctor has caused national outrage, similar to widespread protests that followed the mass rape of a 23-year-old student in 2012 on a bus in New Delhi.

A police volunteer was arrested for the crime and federal police took over the investigation.

Junior doctors have refused to meet non-emergency patients in many areas of the country since the incident at RG Kar Medical College, when they launched protests demanding justice for victims and greater security for women in hospitals.

India's Supreme Court has formed a hospital security task force and asked doctors protesting to return to work, but some doctors refused to give in, including in West Bengal, which is a thousand cities of Kolkata.

On Tuesday, more than 5,000 police officers were deployed in Kolkata and the neighboring town of Howrah, a senior officer said, when protests led by several students began, demanding the resignation of West Bengal Minister Mamata Banerjee.
