The Ulema Agree To Death Penalty For Social Assistance Corruptor

LEBAK - A number of ulema in Lebak Regency, Banten, support the death penalty for perpetrators of corruption in social assistance funds. The goal is to provide a deterrent effect.

"We support the statement by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Firli Bahuri that the corruption case of social assistance funds is punishable by the death sentence in accordance with Article 2 paragraph 2 of the Corruption Act", said the charismatic ulema of Lebak Regency, KH Hasan Basri, in Lebak, quoted by Antara, Friday, March 26.

So far, there have been no corruption cases in the country since the reformation - from President Abdurahman Wahid to Joko Widodo - not a single perpetrator of corruption has been sentenced to death.

They strongly agree that the death penalty is applied to perpetrators of social assistance fund corruption on the grounds that it can cause misery for many people and can also lead to death.

Moreover, he said, currently, Indonesia is hit by non-natural disasters with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and residents needed social assistance funds from the government.

"We agree with the KPK chairman's statement to bring up the corruption case of social assistance funds for the death penalty", Hasan said.

According to him, the Islamic view of perpetrators of corruption can cause a lot of misery to death, so that it needs to be taken firmly and appropriately to apply the death penalty.

This is because, in several countries in the world, up to now, they still apply the death penalty for corruptors, including China, Thailand, Iraq, Iran, Morocco, Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar.

"We hope that the corruption case of social assistance funds can be realized by the application of the death penalty", said the head of the Nurul Hidayah Rangkasbitung Islamic Boarding School.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the IV Council of Indonesian Ulama in Lebak Regency, KH Baidjuri, said that corruptors of social assistance funds deserve to be sentenced to death and corruption cases in Indonesia can also incessantly harm the lives of many people. "We hope that the government can impose the death penalty for corruptors, such as the same case with drug abuse perpetrators", he said.
