President Putin Ensures Ukraine Will Receive Opposite Responses To Attacks On Borders
JAKARTA - President Vladimir Putin said on Monday Ukraine's biggest attack on Russian territory since the start of the war was aimed at improving Kyiv's negotiating position ahead of possible peace negotiations and slowing the progress of Russian troops.
Ukrainian troops broke through Russia's borders last Tuesday and swept through several parts of the western part of the Russian Kursk region, a sudden attack that exposed the weakness of Russia's border defense in the area.
President Putin said Ukraine "with the help of its Western rulers" was trying to improve its position ahead of possible negotiations.
He questioned what negotiations might be made with the enemy he accused of shooting at Russian civilians and nuclear facilities indiscriminately.
"The main task, of course, is for the Ministry of Defense to pressure, to paralyze enemies from our territory," President Putin said, adding that Russian troops were accelerating their advance along the 1,000 km main frontline.
"The enemy will certainly receive the appropriate response," he said.
The Kremlin's leader further said he expected further Ukraine's efforts to disrupt Russia's Western border.
Russian officials say Ukraine is trying to show its Western supporters they can still deploy massive military operations, while pressure is increasing on Kyiv and Moscow to agree on negotiations over the cessation of war.
Earlier, Ukrainian troops began major attacks on the Kursk Region on August 6, quoted from TASS. Missile attacks warning has been issued repeatedly in the region since then. According to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, more than 8,000 people have been evacuated from border areas over the past day due to Ukrainian attacks, and more than 6,000 people have been stationed in temporary accommodation centers.
