5 People Arrested For Military Base Attack In Iraq Injured 5 US Soldiers

JAKARTA - Security forces arrested five people in connection with this week's attack on a military base in Iraq that left five US troops and two US contractors injured.

The arrests were announced by Iraq's Security Authority, the official agency responsible for disseminating security information.

"After an in-depth legal investigation and hearing the testimony of witnesses, the five people involved in this illegal act were arrested," the statement said.

In Monday's attack, two Katyusha rockets were fired at the Ain al-Asad airbase west of the country.

On Tuesday, the Iraqi military condemned what they called a "sembrono" act against bases in its territory. The Iraqi military then confiscated a truck carrying a rocket launcher.

The attack comes as the Middle East prepares for a possible wave of new attacks by Iran and its allies following the assassination of senior members of the militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah last week.

It is unclear whether the incident in Iraq was linked to Iranian threats to retaliate against the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
