Floods And Landslides Kill 2 Residents In China's Sichuan, Dozens Of People Disappear

JAKARTA - Floods and landslides destroyed houses in rural areas and parts of the highway in China's Sichuan province.

The disaster killed two people and left 17 people missing on Saturday, August 3.

In Kangding, a mountainous area in the western highlands of Sichuan, a landslide knocked down several houses in the village, killing two people. While 12 people were reported missing,

CCTV's national television station reported a bridge connecting two tunnels on the toll road connecting Kangding and Ya'an collapsed.

Three vehicles fell off the highway. One of the six passengers has been rescued. It was not specifically stated whether they had fallen from the bridge.

As previously reported, in Zixing, a city in Hunan province, 30 residents were reported dead after Topan Gaemi hit the area with the highest rainfall in late July. Local officials said on Friday, August 2, 35 people were still missing.

Throughout Hunan, the rain caused by the strongest typhoon in China so far this year has affected 1.15 million people and caused direct economic losses of around 6 billion yuan.

The collapse of a highway bridge triggered by flash floods in the northwestern province of Shaanxi killed 38 people, the local government said on Friday in their latest death tally.

Although search and rescue efforts have been carried out in the past two weeks, 24 people are still missing after the collapse of the Shaanxi bridge, which caused 25 vehicles to plunge into the river.
